Strata Coffee Roasters began in 2019 when founder Marcus Chen returned from a year working on coffee farms across East Africa and Central America.
What struck him wasn't just the incredible coffee—it was the gap between what farmers received and what consumers paid, and how little most roasters knew about the actual origins of their beans.
Strata was built to bridge that gap. Every coffee we offer comes from a farm or cooperative we've visited, often multiple times. We pay transparent premiums, commit to multi-year purchasing agreements, and work directly with producers to improve quality and sustainability.
The name "Strata" reflects our philosophy: great coffee is layered, revealing complexity as you explore it. But it also represents the many layers of work—geological, agricultural, social, and technical—that go into each cup.
